The water overcomes me, and for a moment, I hold my breath.
Debris blocks out the sun, and I hear a heart beat.
I drift down deeper into the womb, and hear fluid swish –
Muffled sound from crashing parts but I am untouched.

Until I hold on too long to precious air. I hold on and it hurts.
But too afraid to let go, I hold on until my body shakes.
I hold on until the air escapes.

As the water fills my lungs, I kick and fight.
I am tumbled against the tide.
I wrestle with my thoughts and the anger
That I never had control, but I’m still not ready
To let go.
