Ode To A Squirrel

Poor little squirrely;

I hit you with my car.

I did not mean to do it;

It was an accident by far.

I did not want to smash your tail,

Or squish your brains to mush.

You can’t imagine how bad I feel,

at having hurt you such.

I tried to hit the brakes,

but still I heard your squeal.

As my lovely little Nissan,

smashed your head with its front wheel.

I looked in my front mirror,

to see if you were okay.

And though you scampered from the road,

I doubt you’ll survive the day.

Did you go to squirrel heaven?

Or did you go to squirrel hell?

Did you make it, squirrely?

I’ve no way to tell.

I want you to know I’m sorry.

I’d bring you back in a jiff.

But I don’t have magic powers.

So I’ll just write you this.

It makes me sad when I think,

of the babies you may have had.

Honestly, little squirrely,

I feel like such a cad.

Poor, poor, little squirrely;

I hit you with my car.

I did not mean to do it;

It was an accident by far.
