Courageous

I've been reading everyone's poetry and such, and I've noticed a trend of heartbreak, sadness, and anger. I don't like writing songs or poems based on those emotions. When I write, I tend to write uplifting things which make me feel better.
I wrote this song today, actually, in roughly a 10-minute time span. Backstory: I visited Japan for about a year, and in that time, I fell in love with an amazing man whom I was sad to leave behind after my year-abroad study was up. As such, I am back in my small hometown and finishing university classes in the hopes that I can return to Japan...perhaps even live there permanently. The thought of living in Japan has caused a lot of tension with me and my family, but I'm pretty sure that that is what I want to do. I wrote this song with that in mind.

"Courageous"

I try not to care
What people think
But you know
I get a little jealous.

I try to be
Happy
With what I have
But my eyes are always looking
For the next thing.

I hesitate
To put my foot forward
And face the unknown
And do it all alone.

But when I think of you
So far away
It makes me brave
And I know I can do it.

(Chorus)
I want to chase the stars
Across the universe
Put my best side first
And learn to be courageous.
There’s nothing wrong
With having what you want
And what I want most
Is to be courageous.
Whatever things go wrong
I know I can be strong enough
To face the storm
And be courageous.
You make me courageous.

When I see other people
Going so far
I admit that
I want to go a little further.

I try not to notice;
Oblivious
To their fulfilling lives
Bright like the sunrise.

You know I can’t conceal
How much that appeals
To me
To have the whole world at my feet.

And when I see your face
Behind closed eyes
I remember just who I
Want most to be:

(Chorus)
I want to chase the stars
Across the universe
Put my best side first
And learn to be courageous.
There’s nothing wrong
With having what you want
And what I want most
Is to be courageous.
Whatever things go wrong
I know I can be strong enough
To face the storm
And be courageous.

Why shouldn’t I chase the stars
Across the universe?
Why shouldn’t I have
What I want most in life?
And what I want most
Is to put my best side first
And be courageous.
You make me courageous.

(Repeat chorus)
