The Cold With In

In high school we had some discrimination issues among students so i wrote this poem for the school magazine;

Six men were stranded on an island on a cold winter night.Each man had a log in his hand to feed the dying fire which was keeping them warm.

The first man held back his log for in the group around the fire he saw a black face.Why should he use his log to warm the ignorant black race?

The second man, eyes burning with hatred for other tribes held back his log for among the men around the fire non was of his tribe.Why should his log be used to warm the inferior tribes?

The third man, with his worn out clothes and torn shoes, looked at the faces around the fire and held back his log for among them he saw a rich man in a woolen coat.Why should his log be used to warm the idle rich?

The fourth man looked across at the poor man with his unpleasant appearance and held back his log.Why should he use his log to warm the lazy poor?

The fifth man, looking at the faces around the fire held his log back for he saw no one from his church "idol worshipers" he thought to himself.
Why should his log be used to warm sinners?

The sixth man waited silently for one of the men to put his log in the fire for he would not give to those who did not give to him. Why should his log be used to warm the selfish fools?

In the morning six men lay dead all holding their logs tightly in their hands. They did not die from the cold around them but rather from the cold with in.
