During the 60's, Bill Buckley's Young Americans for Freedom was the counterpart to the Students for a Democratic Society. THe YAF had the pro-war draft dodgers and the SDS had the anti-war draft dodgers. When I left the army, the people my age were two or three rungs up the corporate ladder from me and they generally resented combat veterans for pretty much they resent them today: right wingers like to talk tough, but being around people who are genuinely tough makes them pee in their pants, plus the authentic toughness of the vets is a turn on for their women that money cannot buy.

Cheney's Chicken Hawks, which includes draft dodgers like Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich, talk up support the troops and Vietnam being a noble quest, but their attitude back in the day, when it came to hiring vets, is that, if they were too stupid to avoid Vietnam, they are too stupid to have a real job.

Trust me, this attitude persists to this day, especially among corporate conservatives. It is just one of the reasons why the military suicide rate is so high: guys and girls who are used to being embedded in a culture of mutual support and an ethic reflecting the values of Jesus, who said No greater love hath no man but that he lay down his life for his friends, come back to work for people for whom selfishness is a virtue and winning by intimidation is the cultural norm.

This is not new. My dad ran into the same thing when he came back from the Philipines. He went back into the Army.

Those corporate types feel the same way about those of us who served during Reagan's secret wars. They love to talk all "bad ***" but are scared because most vets DO NOT intimidate.

This is exactly true. They don't care about military members unless they are actually fighting some pointless foreign war. Come back with problems and the VA is another set of problems. Many vets suffer needlessly. **** Cheney's buddies can't make money off the VA.

The hypocrisy is outrageous. Here is a good one...
A 16yr.old girl in Texas, is suing her parents because they are forcing her to get an abortion. As you can imagine the pro-lifers are outraged. How dare those parents force their morals on their child!!! The girl's lawyers are citing Roe vs. Wade as their defense. Because as you know, women have the right to their own reproductive rights.

You can't make this stuff up.

"But in between birth and military age, they could give a rats *** about you!"

I would agree with your post almost 100%, except the part where you state they care when you reach the military. At least as far as the 1% part of this equation is concerned.

They don't care at all about the military aged youth or those in the military. Oh, they bend over backwards with their bleeting and patriotic statements, but the 1% don't give a ****.

Because if they cared, if they really believed in all of this patriotic honor and glory of service, then how come so few of them and almost none of them ever experience the military?

The 1% and the spawn of the 1% don't do the dying. Oh, they speak to it and glorify it louder than anyone, but when it comes to where the rubber meets the road, they are almost universally absent.

They don't care- it's hypocrisy. They just pretend to care.

Oh, it gets worse! When the U.S invaded Iraq, there was a shortage of body armor for our brave soldiers going into battle. Their own families had to purchase body armor to help ensure their safety. So much for the military spending ALL that money to safeguard their own troops.http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2004-03-26-body-armor_x.htm

That's because wayyy toooo much of our defense spending goes to no-bid military contractors like Bechtel - so they can 'build things' like shower facilities where our actual troops are electrocuted.
